making time
Whenever I do something creative or funny, someone always seems to voice a concern that I have too much time on my hands. This has never made sense to me.
OH ANDREA, this is a phrase that really gets my goat. You know that screamin’ beans flash thing I made a while ago? It got put on digg and stumble upon and went around the houses. Many people commented on it, good and bad. I don’t mind negative comments, like “this is retarded” etc. - I quite enjoy them in fact. If someone thinks something I’ve done is stupid, who cares? I like it, so “pfffff”.
But the one comment that annoyed me was “this guy has way too much time on his hands.”
WHAT THE SHUCKS ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? You’re taking time out of your day to make a not-even-negative comment about something that everyone else seems to enjoy, and I’m the one who has too much time on my hands? I had fun making it, I made something that makes me and other people laugh, and that’s a waste of time compared to sitting on the internet making worthless comments? NO SIR.
Also it was a university project! And I got a good mark for it!
Did you get a good mark for thinking that putting effort into creating something new that you and other people will enjoy is a waste of time? I wonder who enjoyed your comment. Probably not even you. Nil pwah! (‘Pwah’ is French for points)
Anyway, I spose I don’t really mind. I just find it sad that some people have been instilled with this idea that unless you’re toiling over something boring what you’re doing is unimportant. Maybe jealousy has something to do with it. But if you can spend at least some of your time doing something you enjoy, and create something new as a result, do you have too much time? I reckon you probably don’t have enough.
People should make more stuff. It’s fun and fun is fun. It makes you happy and fun. Things don’t always have to have a point to be worthwhile. I like kites because they’re completely pointless - made to be flown in the air for a period of time, then brought back in, having achieved no real goals other than “be in the air”. But people love them because they are fun, and having fun makes you happy. Just take a look at all this fun…
